Abstract:

Aim The aim of this elaboration is the judgement of a new method of intervention, the SenseWear ® monitoring bracelet concerning his motivation-supporting effects within a behavioral modification with overweight persons to more physical activity in the everyday life. This bracelet can be carried in the everyday life up to two weeks permanently and measures, besides, the most different body signals to collect data which lead to the calculation of the whole energy consumption and active energy consumption. These can be shown by transmission of the data to the computer, fast and simply as result protocols.
The insight into own movement behaviour and the energy consumption should serve to promote introspection and self-control and therefore the motivation. The investigation of these intervention means is significant in this respect, because the lack of physical activity is one of the main causes for obesity.
Method To investigate the aims a five-week intervention study with three test persons takes place, while the SenseWear ® monitoring bracelet is carried for a total of three weeks. The concept of the study is based on the bases on the principles of behavioral modification which are tested within behaviour therapies sufficiently. A self-provided evaluation questionnaire for the test persons to fill in after finishing the study should determine how the study and in particular the bracelet are judged by the study participants all together.
Results The results of the evaluations of movement behaviour of the test persons by the SenseWear ® monitoring bracelet conclude by no clear behavioral changes. Indeed, the study period with only five weeks has even been a rather short intervention duration. A longer intervention duration would have produced maybe clearer results. The questioning of the test persons by the evaluation questionnaire makes visible that the SenseWear ® monitoring bracelet is estimated by all study participants unanimously as extremely motivation-supporting and helpfully for learning of a new movement behaviour.
