Abstract:

The following thesis is concerned with nutrition issues and informational material for the counseling of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and in the complementary food. The thesis, which nutrition issues are relevant to the counseling and if midwives receive sufficient training during education and other skill enhancements. Furthermore the question is how information material for midwives and / or (expecting) mothers could be designed in the future to compensate any possible gaps in their knowledge. In order to answer these questions, a questionnaire survey with 31 participating midwives from Hamburg and Lower Saxony was performed. The demands placed on the midwives were found to be very comprehensive and detailed. 35 % of the midwives say that they discuss nutrition issues with only every 5th pregnant woman (or less). Moreover, the first contacts between midwives and patients happen at 52 % after the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, which tends to be too late for a comprehensive nutritional counseling. Vitamins and minerals are key issues and need to be considered when designing information material in the form of handouts. In conclusion, qualified nutrition counseling by midwives can only be provided or further supported if the respective education is reformed with regard to substance and structure.
