Title: Mobile VR Interaction Design. Nutzerzentrierte Gestaltung von smartphone-basierterVirtual Reality
Language: German
Authors: Uhr, Manuela
Issue Date: 26-Apr-2017
Abstract:

This thesis aims to investigate user-centered design in virtual reality apps. Given that this technology is still emerging, further research into smartphone based virtual reality is critical for future decisions designing accessible and interactive virtual environments.
This thesis offers a substantial collection of theoretical and practical knowledge on this topic, thereby enabling further research and future technologies.
The content of this paper is divided into four parts: the first part describes basic aspects, goals and challenges of virtual reality. In the second part, important hardware specifications are described and current limitations discussed. The third and largest part collates relevant research material useful for designing virtual worlds and interactions intended to be compatible with mobile hardware. This research material is used to develop several virtual reality apps focusing on varying use cases. The last chapter documents the development process of these apps which consisted mainly of rapid prototyping and iterative testing. Different interactions were designed to complement the different utilities and to offer a intuitive, accessible virtual reality experience.
In conclusion, this thesis argues that despite its current technical limitations, smartphonebased VR has broad potential to continue to growmore immersive and market-viable in the future. This potential can only be fully exploited with further research in the field. This thesis contributes to that growth by offering the necessary material for designing better virtual experiences for mobile and future VR technology.
